今F.A. Hayekの”The Road to Serfdom"　http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/0226320618/touen-22/を読んでいます。この本は保守思想の基礎を築いたと言ってもおかしくない本です。１９４４年に自由・民主主義・社会主義を１７７０－１９４０の間の歴史を考えながら語っている。すばらしい本だ。

 

この本の中からDe Tocquevilleが１８４８年に書いた文章より：

 

Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom, socialism restricts it.  Democracy attaches all possible value to each man; socialism makes each man a mere agen, a mere number.  Democracy and socialism have nothing in comon but one word: equality.  But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.
